Major issues are arising in Mexico just months before the country is slated to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and soccer fans around the world are massively concerned.
In recent days, a Mexico cartel battle has ensued after a powerful drug kingpin was killed during a military operation. As a result, many news organizations have reported that the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes aka ‘El Mencho’ has caused a significant rise in violence.

That’s included members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) taking over public transportation and other local businesses in over 20 Mexican states. This comes just four months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup returns to North America.

While the bulk of the World Cup matches will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada each have responsibilities to present games as well.
However, given the current state of the Mexican cartel war there are growing concerns from soccer fans. Those that have already purchased tickets certainly have reservations about safety at the event.
Mexico’s top soccer league, Liga MX, postponed several high-profile matches due to tension in the country. Meanwhile, there’s no timetable for when teams could return to the pitch in cities affected by the violence.

The Mexican national team is slated to kick off the 2026 FIFA World Cup when the group stage begins in June. Mexico will take on South Africa, South Korea and an undetermined opponent in the first round of the competition.
