DG/Safety Railway Board inaugurates training for Tanzanian personnel

Indian Railways Institute of Disaster Management (IRIDM) Bengaluru, popularly known as IRIDM, is a unique facility in the world dedicated to capacity building in the domain of Railway Disaster Management.
IRIDM has trained more than 14,000 personnel drawn from different Railway streams, including officers in Railway Disaster Management. Since being commissioned 06 years ago, IRIDM has also conducted special courses for personnel from NDRF, SDRFs, and Civil Defence, and has earned appreciation for its hands-on training techniques and quality inputs.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), handpicked IRIDM for the capacity building of disaster management personnel from emerging economies under its Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme (ITEC) initiative. The first batch of 15 delegates from Tanzania is attending a two-week module at IRIDM under this programme from 23.02.2026 to 06.03.2026.
Hitendra Malhotra, Director General (Safety), Railway Board, while inaugurating the training programme at IRIDM, stated that such training programmes will foster synergistic efforts in disaster management in the spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’.
M. Ramakrishna, Principal Chief Safety Officer, South Western Railway; VVS Sreenivas, Director, IRIDM; and Ashutosh Kumar Singh, Divisional Railway Manager, Bengaluru were also present on this occasion.
The Tanzanian team of trainees under the leadership of Mr. Abraham G. Ntezidyo shall be given exposure to challenging accident scenarios involving bridges, water bodies etc. apart from other typical situations. Repeated practice on Virtual and Augmented Reality modules in firefighting and trauma Management is also provided to sharpen their skills and responses. Rigorous exercises on Railway coaches are integrated in the physical training program to accelerate the learning curve. They will be co-practicing with the elite personnel of NDRF and RPF, undergoing integrated training in the specialised Railway Module at IRIDM.
The two-week ITEC course on Railway Rescue and Recovery Operations, specially designed and delivered by IRIDM, equips frontline Railway and emergency responders with the skills to handle various challenging, high-impact train disasters through real-world simulations. Global participants will have the opportunity to undergo immersive training in critical areas such as Rail Rescue Fundamental, Multi-Agency Co-ordination during restoration, International Case Studies, Rail Crane Operations, and other essential safety interventions.
