‘I wouldn’t be surprised’: Former Man Utd captain can see INEOS agreeing deal with 6ft4in colossus by the summer

Steve Bruce expects, and wants, to see Harry Maguire offered a new deal by Manchester United before his current one expires.

As things stand, the centre-half will enter the final three months of his contract on Sunday.

Harry Maguire: The state of play

He has been free to talk to foreign clubs over a summer move since the turn of the year, with reports suggesting Maguire was approached by AC Milan in January, but turned them down, making it clear he wanted to continue at Old Trafford.

Any potential extension would see his tenure go beyond the seven-year mark, following his record-breaking switch from Leicester City in 2019.

Maguire will know he’s doing all he can to keep himself in good standing, particularly since Michael Carrick took the reins in January.

Prior to Carrick being appointed, the 32-year-old had missed a large chunk of the season through a thigh injury.

He returned just in time for the interim boss’ first game and was deployed from the off for the Manchester derby. Maguire oversaw a scintillating display as United defeated their arch-rivals 2-0 at Old Trafford.

The following week, he earned the Man of the Match award for his outstanding efforts in the Reds’ unexpected Emirates triumph, with the 3-2 win marking Arsenal’s first loss on home soil this campaign.

Maguire, unsurprisingly, has retained his place for the four subsequent fixtures, and in every match that he has seen out the full 90 minutes under Carrick, United have reigned victorious.

When weighing in on the England star’s future, Bruce told the Daily Mail: “I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets offered a new deal.

“Why wouldn’t you? I think centre-halves get better with age. I wouldn’t be surprised if he went to the World Cup either.

“He’s got good experience, he’s played at the highest level, and he’s never let England down either. He’s given a reminder of just what he’s about over the last five, six weeks in particular, if he ever needed to.”
