Sage Mardjetko pitches shutout for Tennessee against LSU softball

No. 1 Tennessee (21-0, 1-0 SEC) opened SEC softball play on Friday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. The Lady Vols defeated No. 17 LSU (17-5, 0-1 SEC), 6-0. Rankings reflect the NFCA/GoRout Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll.

Sage Mardjetko started for Tennessee and pitched a complete game in seven innings. She totaled six strikeouts and 99 pitches, including 67 strikes, against 24 batters. LSU hit seven groundouts and seven flyouts against the right-handed pitcher.
Tennessee's offense totaled nine hits, including one home run each from Makenzie Butt and Taelyn Holley.
The Lady Vols were 2-for-7 with two outs, 5-for-14 with runners on base and 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Tennessee left four on base and leadoff batters were 2-for-6.
Sophia Knight extended her on-base streak to 15 games for Tennessee.
Game 2 between the Lady Vols and Tigers on Saturday is scheduled for 3 p.m. EST at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium (SEC Network+).
The Lady Vols lead the all-time softball series against LSU, 41-31-1, and are 22-13 in games contested in Knoxville.
