On Tuesday night, the Trojans defeated Long Beach State 6-1 to improve to 16-0, breaking the 1988 team’s record for the best start in program history. After a 7-6 extra innings walk-off victory over San Diego on Wednesday night made it 17 straight, USC hit the road for its first Big Ten road trip of the season with a three-game series at Northwestern.
The Trojans took the first two games of the series, winning 15-1 on Friday and 2-0 in Saturday’s first game. However, due to a storm in the weather forecast, Sunday’s series finale was moved up a day, and the two teams played a doubleheader on Saturday.
As it turns out, all that it took for this team to lose a game was a doubleheader on the other side of the country and some of the craziest baseball weather that you will ever see. Playing in a snowstorm, low visibility, and high winds, USC’s perfect start to the season finally came to an end, as Northwestern won the second game of the doubleheader 2-1 on a walk-off.
While it is obviously sad to see the streak end, USC still has a ton to be proud of. Given how long a baseball season is, the Trojans were inevitably going to lose at some point. Not only did USC set the school record for longest winning streak to open a season, but the Trojans were also the last undefeated team remaining in the country.
After the weather that they saw in Evanston, Illinois over the weekend, the Trojans will likely be very happy to return to Southern California for five home games this week. USC will host San Diego State on Tuesday night and Cal State Bakersfield Wednesday night before resuming Big Ten play with a three-game series against Washington at Dedeaux Field next weekend.
