The American finished 13-under-par to win the tournament after holding his nerve down the closing stretch at one of golf’s most prestigious events.

Young produced an outstanding performance throughout the final round to fend off the other contenders and lift the trophy.

However, the 28-year-old later admitted that the pressure finally caught up with him on the very last hole of the tournament.

Young revealed he felt in control for most of the round before standing over the short putt that secured the victory.

The American explained that the pressure suddenly hit him when he faced an eight-inch putt on the 18th green.

“I was really, really good until I had to make the eight-inch putt on the last hole, and I just about fell apart,” Young admitted.

“I couldn’t get my line to point anywhere near the hole, and I went and hit it anyway, which maybe I shouldn’t have. But it went in, so all is well.”

Fortunately for Young, the ball dropped into the hole, confirming his Players Championship triumph.

Young also produced one of the standout moments of the tournament with an enormous drive on the final hole.

His 375-yard drive on the 18th was the longest ever recorded on that hole at TPC Sawgrass.

Young admitted his driving had been inconsistent during the week, but he found his best swing when it mattered most.

“I drove it so well last week, and I drove it so average this week. I felt like I never quite got into a rhythm. It just never came out the way that I meant it to. And I finally hit a couple of good ones on the back,” he explained.

“Then yeah, the one on 18, my thought process over that ball is, one, making sure that I’m committed to my line, and two, the overarching thought is I’m going to hit the best shot of my life right here.

“I don’t know if I can think of one that’s better. So to do it, especially given what happened yesterday… Yeah, it’s a scary tee shot. To have hit that one in that moment, that’s pretty good.”

The huge drive helped Young set up the final hole and ultimately to complete a career-defining victory at The Players Championship.
