Crochet, unlike last spring, did not have a great spring training. He posted a 7.36 ERA. He finished his spring training off against the Atlanta Braves, allowing six earned runs and six hits. Alex Cora spoke on his rough outing and outlook for the season.

“We were ahead in counts. We just didn’t finish them,” Cora said, per MassLive's Chris Cotillo on Saturday. “He got his reps. He touched the rubber in the sixth, which is good enough for us. Now, he’ll be ready for Cincinnati.

“I’m not concerned. I’m excited about the opportunity of him going out there for 30+ outings, then pitching in October and helping us win the World Series.”

Crochet noted that last spring he pitched well, but did not pitch well in his first regular-season start. This year could end up being the opposite. Crochet noted that he felt like he got better with each outing and that his pitch selection may have played a role in the numbers not being great. He also said that his pitch selection in the regular season would be different.

Crochet spoke on his mindset going into the season after a long spring of building up and working on things.

“Nothing’s really changing for me mindset-wise,” Crochet said. “Today, I felt like it was a big step forward. I know I’ve been saying it all the time and at some point you get tired of steps forward and working on (expletive) and you’ve just got to go out there and do it. That’s how I feel right now.”

Crochet will look to build on an American League Cy Young Award runner-up season. However, the bigger goal is to help get the Red Sox back to the World Series.
