Carlos Adames routs “Ammo” Williams, retains WBC title

Carlos Adames may have had his best performance yet this evening, largely dominating his WBC middleweight title defense against challenger Austin “Ammo” Williams, retaining the title via wide unanimous decision.

The 31-year-old Adames (25-1-1, 18 KO) dropped Williams (20-2, 13 KO) in the second round, and more or less had his way for the rest of the fight, showing too much firepower for an incredibly brave and determined Williams, who took a beating over the 12 rounds, showing warrior heart but failing to win rounds.

Williams, 29, doesn’t have anything to be ashamed of with this loss, as he gave an outstanding effort that spoke volumes about his toughness, but he was a clear second-best pretty much the entire night. Adames, who hadn’t fought in just over a year, thudded away with his jab and made clear cases for himself in most rounds, leaving “Ammo” bloodied and battered by the end.

Adames did lose a point in round 12 for repeated low blows.

“I feel like I’m the best at 160 right now,” Adames said after the fight, noting that he’s ready to face anyone at 160, or he is open to moving up to 168 for a big fight, too.
