Dave Roberts Defends Tanner Scott After Poor Outing

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts uplifted Tanner Scott despite his disastrous outing against the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.

Scott, after a strong start to the spring, has looked shaky in his last two appearances. He allowed his first earned runs of spring against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, and things only got worse against the Angels.

The southpaw lasted just 0.1 innings, allowing three hits and a walk as well as four runs. Roberts didn’t seem concerned, though, and revealed he’d likely be going to Scott during Monday’s game at Dodger Stadium as well.

“I thought the stuff was really good,” Roberts said.

“…I think tonight, for me, he’ll be in there tomorrow to clean up an inning. I thought the stuff was good tonight.”

Prior to his last two outings, Scott showed real improvement compared to the shell of the All-Star Dodgers fans watched last season. Roberts has also been impressed with the left-hander throughout the spring.

“Tanner Scott looked fantastic,” Roberts said. “It’s one day, but the stuff, the delivery was as good as I’ve seen from him and that includes all of last year.”

“…He had a lot of stuff going on internally, with his body, that we addressed at the end of the season, so I think that might have bled into some cleaning up of some mechanics, but the ball was coming out differently than I remember it.”

How Did Tanner Scott Perform in 2025?

Dodger fans will hope Scott’s meltdown Sunday isn’t a sign of things to come, his struggles last year cost the Dodgers several important games.

The reliever had one of his worst MLB seasons in 2025, posting a 4.74 ERA with the Dodgers through 61 appearances. He blew 10 of his 33 save attempts — the most in his career — and allowed double-digit homers for the first time in his career.

Scott is undertaking a new role as a reliever for the Dodgers after they signed All-Star closer Edwin Diaz to a three-year deal, and will look to make some improvements to assist the Dodgers in their campaign for the franchise’s first three-peat.
