Former 49ers' third-round pick to visit Commanders

Another former connection of Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters is coming to town.

Peters is continuing to look through his connections to see who can help Washington in 2026. Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network reported on Wednesday that veteran cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon is visiting the Commanders on Thursday. A third-round draft selection (66) in the 2017 NFL Draft, Witherspoon turned 31 just four days ago (March 21). If he were to be signed, Witherspoon would add size at corner, being listed at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds.

Witherspoon spent his initial four NFL seasons (2017-2020) with the 49ers, so Peters certainly has more than a casual knowledge of Witherspoon. He then moved on to Pittsburgh, playing for the Steelers in the 2021-2022 seasons. The most recent three years of his career have been with the Los Angeles Rams (2023-2025).

If last week's signings are any indication (and they are), Peters will be looking to sign Witherspoon to a team-friendly deal. Don't be surprised if it is another one-year (prove-it) deal. Peters has demonstrated this offseason that he is interested in getting much younger. But the Commanders are so thin and unproven at cornerback. Until Peters can get a younger corner into the fold on a longer-term deal, it's safe to expect a one-year deal. Witherspoon has 13 interceptions in his nine NFL seasons.

These are the corners on the Commanders roster as of March 25, 2026:

  • Trey Amos, age 24, second NFL season
  • Mike Sainristil, age 25, third NFL season
  • Amik Robertson, age 28, seventh NFL season
  • Darius Rush, age 26, second NFL season
  • Tre Hawkins III, age 25, third NFL season
  • Quantrezz Knight, age 28, first NFL season
  • Carlin Vigers, age 25, first NFL season (was on Commanders 2025 Practice Squad)
