Indiana transfer WR gets earful from Curt Cignetti for gold cleats

· Yahoo Sports

For the first day of Indiana Hoosiers spring practice, transfer wide receiver Nick Marsh trotted onto the field wearing gold cleats. To put it lightly, head coach Curt Cignetti wasn't pleased.

"I didn't love those gold shoes that he came out in," Cignetti told reporters. "He learned what getting your ass ripped is all about. I don't know if that happened to him very often at Michigan State."

March committed to Indiana during the Hoosiers' College Football Playoff run after two seasons with the Michigan State Spartans. In two years, he totaled 1,311 yards and nine touchdowns on 100 receptions, becoming one of the top young pass catchers in college football.

As a transfer, he was rated as a four-star and ranked as the No. 10 wide receiver, per 247 Sports. He's expected to follow in the footsteps of Elijah Sarratt, who followed Cignetti from James Madison and molded himself into a sure-fire 2026 NFL draftee after two years in Bloomington.

But to Cignetti, none of that matters.

The championship-winning head coach went viral for his no-nonsense approach last season, as he rarely smiled on the sidelines despite his team blowing past all competition on their way to a 16-0 campaign.

Apparently so, flashy cleats were not going to fly on day one of spring practices, with Cignetti sending the message that no one is above the team and questioning the bottom-feeding Spartans along the way.

Despite the butt-chewing, as they say, Cignetti reaffirmed Marsh's work ethic following the pre-practice ripping.

"It was a wake-up call," he said. "But no, he's really worked hard."
