HIGHLIGHTS

  • The main event ended in controversy as a former two-time middleweight champion abandoned the game plan that was clearly working and got finished in the second round.
  • The co-main event produced one of the most savage knockouts in recent memory as a former champion made a violent statement on her path back to title contention.
  • Eleven stoppages in 13 fights made this the most action-packed MMA event of the year with four highlight-reel knockouts and controversy throughout the card.

The UFC Seattle card was the best MMA event of the year and second place isn't close. After 13 fights, we had a little bit of everything. There were 11 stoppages--including four savage knockouts--controversy, and a fight that appeared to be a clear Fight of the Night. In the main event, Joe Pyfer defeated former champion Israel Adesanya via second-round TKO. With all due respect to Pyfer, Adesanya's performance was the only disappointing aspect of the event.

After dominating the first round and the first aspect of the second, he completely lost his mind and decided to brawl with an opponent whose only chance to win was if Adesanya chose to fight him that way. Ultimately, he got caught, taken down and dragged into Pyfer's world. Pyfer pounded Adesanya out forcing referee Dan Miragliotta to call a halt to the fight.

Coming into the fight, Adesanya was No. 4 and Pyfer was No. 14. That'll change with Pyfer likely ascending into the Top 5. Who knows how far Adesanya will fall?

Pyfer earned one of the performance bonuses along with Alexa Grasso. Ignacio Bahamondes and Tofiq Musayev took Fight of the Night.

How Pyfer Shocked Adesanya

I have an issue with the way Adesanya lost. If a fighter loses because they made a tactical error or simply got bested by a better opponent, it is what it is. However, fighters in the UFC seem to get caught up in trying to appease the casuals who can only appreciate blood-and-guts wars.

I can appreciate those scraps, but there is something to be said for the skill Adesanya used to bring when he was at his best. We saw some of that tonight before he went off the rails.

Adesanya controlled the first round with jabs, calf kicks and distance management that had Pyfer struggling to close the gap. Early in the second, more of the same. Then Adesanya inexplicably started swinging wild, allowing Pyfer to close distance, secure the takedown at the two-minute mark, transition to the back and rain down ground-and-pound until the referee stopped it at 4:18. It was the biggest win of Pyfer’s career and the most puzzling loss of Adesanya's.

Grasso's Violent Return

Grasso’s KO was one of the most savage finishes I’ve seen in recent years. It was a big comeback, statement finish for the former champion. She is still a couple more wins away from legitimately challenging for the title again.

Grasso put Barber away with a clean knockout at 2:42 of round one. Grasso (16-5-1) hadn’t won since her upset of Valentina Shevchenko in 2023, going winless across a draw and a decision loss in the Shevchenko trilogy. This finish resets the conversation and it puts Grasso at 2-0 over Barber head-to-head.

Best Finishes on the Card

Grasso's finish was at the top of the mountain of filthy finishes in Seattle.

Terrance McKinney needed just 24 seconds to TKO Kyle Nelson in the fastest finish of the night. Lance Gibson Jr. stopped Chase Hooper via knees in 56 seconds. Yousri Belgaroui dropped Mansur Abdul-Malik with a devastating knee in round three. Michael Chiesa locked in a rear-naked choke on Niko Price in just 63 seconds. Casey O’Neill KO'd Gabriella Fernandes at 3:11 of the first round.

Full Results

The amount of finishes--and memorable ones at that--combined with a dose of controversy from Tyrell Fortune's win to the quality of the fights that went the distance, this one was an elite event. Alexia Thainara's win over Bruna Brasil went the distance to open the show, and that was a strong fight too.

In case you missed it, Marcin Tybura was originally announced as the winner over Fortune, but as it turned out, Bruce Buffer made an error in the post-fight announcements. Fortune was called back to the cage where he was announced as the winner.

Here is all of the results from the Seattle card.
