The Tigers will face Nebraska in a nationally televised match Sep. 6 on FOX as part of the inaugural SEC/Big Ten Volleyball Challenge Week. MU’s match with the Cornhuskers is part of a doubleheader that will also include Kentucky and Penn State.
“What an incredible opportunity for our volleyball team to compete under the lights at Wrigley Field this fall against Nebraska,” head coach Dawn Sullivan said in the Mizzou Athletics press release. “This is a moment our players will carry with them for the rest of their lives. To play on such a historic stage, in a city that means so much to us, makes it even more memorable.”
This is the second consecutive year Mizzou has appeared on national television during the regular season, as the Tigers faced Stanford in the SEC/ACC Showdown at the Net last fall on ESPN.
As part of the challenge with the Big Ten, MU will also host Oregon at Hearnes Center on Tuesday, Sep. 1.
Mizzou is coming off a down season where it missed the NCAA Tournament, but the program’s overall success under Sullivan and the university’s massive alumni base in the Chicago area made it a natural choice for the match at Wrigley. Nebraska was also a no-brainer: the Huskers are college volleyball’s biggest brand and have a loyal fanbase that will likely cover the historic ballpark in a sea of red.
The high-profile match presents an opportunity for MU to elevate its national profile as the program looks to get back to the tournament with a talented, young roster just two seasons after making it to the Sweet Sixteen.
