Rohit Shetty Under Scrutiny For Allegedly Using 'Police' Markings & Flashing Lights On Private SUVs In Mumbai

· Free Press Journal

Filmmaker Rohit Shetty reportedly came under the scanner after allegedly using private vehicles fitted with police-style markings and lights, a move that authorities say may violate traffic regulations. The development comes months after a shooting incident was reported outside the director’s residence in Mumbai earlier this year, following which he had sought enhanced security from the police.

According to a report in Midday, officials have stated that at least two of Shetty’s private sports utility vehicles (SUVs) are allegedly displaying the word “POLICE” and are fitted with flashing lights similar to those used by law enforcement vehicles. Both actions are prohibited under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, which restricts the use of such markings and equipment to official police vehicles.

The fifth installment of his Golmaal franchise is currently being filmed in Mumbai.

Photographs of the two SUVs reportedly show police-style features on the vehicles, and traffic officials have confirmed that the cars are registered in Shetty’s name. Records accessed by officers from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) indicate that the vehicles belong to the filmmaker and are not associated with the police department.

A senior traffic officer told the news publication that displaying police markings on private vehicles is clearly prohibited under law. Officials from the RTO also confirmed that such violations can attract penalties under Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

A senior RTO official said, “Under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, as amended in 2019, displaying a 'Police' sticker, logo, or board on a private vehicle is a punishable offence under Section 177. This section serves as the general provision for punishing traffic violations where a specific penalty is not stipulated elsewhere.”

Demand for security post firing incident

A firing incident was reported outside Shetty’s residence in the early hours of February 1 and the Lawrence Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility for the shooting.

Following the incident, Shetty reportedly wrote to Deven Bharti, Commissioner of Mumbai Police, requesting enhanced security for himself as well as the cast and crew of his upcoming film Golmaal 5. The film features a star-studded cast including Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Shreyas Talpade, Arshad Warsi and Tusshar Kapoor.

However, police officials said that the level of security sought by the filmmaker has not yet been granted and his request is still under consideration.
