'Them boys gonna be good!' Ryan Wingo impressed by young Texas QBs

We are probably in the final year of the Arch Manning era at Texas. If the Longhorns have a successful season and Manning has a solid, healthy season, he will most certainly declare for the 2027 NFL Draft. That makes his backups important this season. One veteran has been impressed with young quarterbacks KJ Lacey and Dia Bell in spring practice.

"Them boys gonna be good. KJ and Dia. I was actually throwing with KJ yesterday. That leadership thing. He hit me up to go throw, so he's kinda putting that out there off the rip. Dia, as well, he's gonna be good too. He's a freshman but they kinda getting all the good reps they can right now in the spring. So, them boys are gonna be good." - Texas Longhorns Wide Receiver Ryan Wingo

Junior wide receiver Ryan Wingo has been impressed so far by the young QB duo. Lacey has actually been proactive in hitting up wideouts for extra throwing practice. Bell, of course, has been a part of just seven practices in total.

Lacey had a record setting senior year and was named Alabama’s “Mr. Football” as a senior in 2024 at Saraland High School. One of the top pure passers in the 2025 recruiting cycle, Lacey is known for his quick release, accuracy at multiple levels, and ability to maneuver under pressure.

While he lacks prototypical size, he makes up for it with sharp decision-making and the ability to create throwing lanes with his arm angles. His deep-ball accuracy and ability to extend plays make him a tough challenge for opposing defenses.

The son of former NBA star Raja Bell, former five-star Dia Bell was the jewel of Texas' 2026 recruiting class. The Florida native was the No. 1 QB in the class. He brings many elite traits to the table but chief among them is his accuracy and touch. His ability to make layered throws consistently is downright elite and fits the “point guard” type role in the offense, something that fits Sarkisian’s offense perfectly.

Bell was the MVP at the exclusive Elite 11 quarterback camp. Of the eleven Texas quarterbacks to be invited to the event in history, Bell is the first to win the overall MVP. Bell, who was named the Florida Gatorade Player of the Year, has had back to back seasons cut short due to injury.
