Peel Regional Police responded to the home at Cherrytree Dr. and Ray Lawson Blvd. around 10:45 p.m. where they found two female victims, who were taken to a trauma centre.
“I can tell you that an altercation occurred inside the home and two women were stabbed,” PRP Media Officer Laurie McCann told reporters at the scene on Friday morning.
“A female in her 70s and a second female is in her 50s,” said McCann. “I can tell you that both those victims were transferred to a trauma centre and they’re both currently listed in life-threatening condition.”
She later added that their conditions were “somewhat stable.”, noting that “those two terms don’t really go together but they are stable at this time, if that makes sense.”
McCann said the male suspect was tracked down by police in a vehicle that was not his, but not stolen, a short distance away.
“The suspect that was on scene did flee the area in a vehicle and was caught a short time later by police,” she said. “That suspect is a 46-year-old man that is now in custody and currently facing charges of two counts of attempted murder.”
Cops say victims, suspect are related
McCann said the victims and the suspect are related to each other, but wouldn’t elaborate further “to protect the victims and the rest of the family.”
She couldn’t say if other people, including children, were in the home at the time of the stabbings. McCann didn’t believe so, stating someone in the home made the initial call to police.
A weapon was recovered at the scene.
The police spokesperson said it was “too early to determine” if it was a case of intimate partner violence, but noted “there’s a good chance it’s not.”
It’s unknown whether police had been previously called to the home for any kind of domestic calls.
McCann also couldn’t comment on whether the male suspect lived at the home where the stabbings allegedly occurred. She noted it was an isolated incident and there was no threat to public safety.
“No officers were injured, and there’s no other injuries at this time and there’s no other suspects that we’re looking for,” she said.
