GAME OF THE DAY

Dylan Poloski’s walkoff double in the bottom of the eighth inning plated Cullen Crain and gave the Hendricken baseball team a 7-6 victory over Bishop Feehan, a neighboring state power visiting from Massachusetts.

Crain tapped an infield single to short leading off the lone extra frame and was running on the pitch when Poloski sent a drive to deep left-center. Crain scored easily and Bishop Hendricken's players emptied out of the home dugout at Pepin Field.

Jordi Burgos fired a 1-2-3 top of the eighth to give the Hawks a chance to walk it off and earn the victory. That was the only clean inning of the day for either team, as 10 pitchers combined to allow 17 hits and 12 runs through the first seven frames.

Bishop Feehan faced a 5-4 deficit into the top of the seventh before loading the bases with one out. Colin McEwan’s grounder to short resulted in a fielder's choice, but the throw to first got away to plate two runs. The Shamrocks carried a 6-5 lead into the bottom half.

Bishop Hendricken put a man in scoring position with two outs when Yadier Blanco’s deep fly to right hung up in the gusty wind and bright sun for a double. Henry Alfonso’s grounder to short was thrown away for an error, allowing Blanco to score to knot the game at 6-6.

The Hawks (3-0) took a 4-2 lead in the fourth on Poloski’s two-run single to right but were never safe. Bishop Feehan (4-4) clawed back single runs in each of the next two innings to make it 4-4 but fell behind again in the sixth when Mason Crain sent a two-out RBI double down the line in left. That gave Bishop Hendricken a one-run lead with just three outs to record.

McEwan reached safely four times while Declan Gallivan and Nolan Harvey each scored a pair of runs for the Shamrocks. It was their second loss of the week against Rhode Island opposition – the first came in a 1-0 shutout at La Salle. Poloski collected three hits and three RBI for the Hawks while Cullen Crain added three hits and a pair of runs scored.

⚾BASEBALL – Division I

North Kingstown 8, Smithfield 4

The Skippers started strong and staved off a late rally by the Sentinels to pull out the 8-4 win.

Trying to get to .500, North Kingstown got RBI singles from Brandon Venditto and Ethan Schmitt in the first inning before two bases-loaded walks made it a 4-0 game. Smithfield responded with one run in the bottom half, but NK came right back with another in the top of the second.

The Skippers were cruising right along up 6-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth before trouble struck. Sophomore starter Cody Van Wormer got the first batter of the inning, but gave up back-to-back singles before walking the bases loaded.

After hitting Luke Dwyer with a pitch and giving up a sacrifice fly to Chase Prata, Van Wormer was pulled for John O’Rourke, who promptly hit the next two batters, bringing in another run. O’Rourke settled in after the run crossed and ended the inning with a 6-4 lead.

North Kingstown added two more runs in the top of the sixth and sophomore Rocco Coseglia took the mound to throw two shutout innings to earn the save

Venditto and Schmitt both had two hits, two RBI and scored one run. Evan Rodger drove in a pair for the Skippers and Colton Kim had two hits and scored once.

Prata finished with two RBI for Smithfield. Jake Sylvester scored twice in the loss.

⚾BASEBALL – Division II

East Greenwich 14, Barrington 6

The Avengers put up football numbers in the third inning and rolled to a 13-6 win over the Eagles.

Trailing 3-0 heading to the third, East Greenwich proceeded to send 17 batters to the plate, scoring six runs before there were two outs and seven runs after. Nick Malafronte drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at three and Tyler Nuti followed with a walk to take the lead for good.

Up 6-3 on Division I Barrington with two outs, Brady O’Brien hit a two-run single and Miles Doman hit a two-run triple that got EG to double digits. Nick Colucci came up with an RBI single and Malafronte’s two-run single capped scoring for the inning.

Walker Klika had a big game for the Avengers, going 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. Colucci went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI and O’Brien was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. Doman finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. Malafronte had two RBI in the win and Van Martin had two runs.

Santinp Giuffrida led the Barrington offense, going 2-for-4 with four RBI. Alex Anderson scored twice and Lucas Tanous had two hits and one run.

Narragansett 18, Prout 0

The Mariners had a steady stream of offense before putting up a huge number in the sixth in the 18-0 win over the Crusaders.

Narragansett got two on the board in the first on a Vito Paglia RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Finley Hohl. It was the start of a trend, as the Mariners scored two runs in each of the first four innings.

Up 8-0 in the sixth, freshman Max Downey hit a two-run single and then the fireworks really started. A bases-loaded walk to Hunter Kopf got things going as Narragansett scored runs on a variety of walks, hits and error for the next seven batters for the game’s final runs.

Jackson DiFilippo led from the top for Narragansett, going 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. Paglia went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Hohl was 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Hohl was also dynamic on the mound, spreading seven hits over five shutout innings with three strikeouts.

Cameron Randall and Ryan Antonucci both had two hits in the loss for Prout.

🥎SOFTBALL – Division I

St. Raphael 3, Moses Brown 2

Sophie Roman saved the day for the Saints, coming up with a two-out single with two outs in the seventh that helped give them a 3-2 win over the Quakers.

St. Raphael was without the services of ace Izzy Sousa, but Emma Martin held things down in the circle. Martin was tagged for two unearned runs – one in the first and one in the sixth – and gave up just three hits with seven strikeout and four walks on the day.

But the Saints struggled to do much against Moses Brown’s Celia Bodurtha, who stymied them and through six innings.

In the seventh, a Quaker miscue allowed the first two batters to reach, but Bodurtha remained calm and got two quick outs. St. Raphael’s Lily Briere worked a walk to load the bases and up stepped Roman, who fouled off the first pitch before ripping one to center that scored two runs.

Moses Brown made things interesting in the seventh, loading the bases with one out, but Martin induced a line drive to third that turned into a game-ending double play.

Roman was a star at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three RBI for St. Raphael.

North Kingstown 18, Cumberland 4

Amelia Fries showed why she’s one of RI’s top hitters, pacing an explosive Skippers’ offense that rolled over the Clippers, 18-4.

Tied at two, Fries struck big with a second-inning inside-the-park home run that gave North Kingstown a 5-2 lead. Mia D’Andrea followed up with one of her own and while Cumberland answered with one run in the bottom half, the Skippers were just getting started.

In the third NK came up with 10 runs on two outs, highlighted by a two-run triple by Fries. The Skippers added two more in the fourth and the game ended after the bottom half via the 12-run rule.

Fries finished the day going 2-for-3 with five RBI and three runs. D’Andrea was 2-for-2 with four runs and one RBI. Mezzanotte, Rosemarie Hayward and Victoria Scotti drove in two runs apiece and Riley McHale scored three times.

Myla DeMartino led Cumberland’s offense, going 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run.

Chariho 13, Prout 0

Adriana Jeannenot was unhittable and Maddie Dorgan mashed as the Chargers took care of business in a 13-0 win over the Crusaders.

Jeannenot hasn’t given up an earned run all season and wasn’t going to let Prout ruin that streak. The Chariho ace threw all five innings – the game was shorted via the 10-run rule – and got 14 of the 15 outs via strikeout. Jeannenot walked one and another Crusader reached via error.

The Chargers didn’t need much on offense, but they got plenty. Dorgan mashed from the top of the order, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs, which included a three-run home run in the fourth inning that gave the Chargers a 7-0 lead.

Kesten Hanks went 4-for-4 for Chariho, driving in four runs. Jeannenot helped her own cause, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs and Anna Tretton scored twice in the win.

East Providence 8, Coventry 3

The Townies offense came alive at the right time, as a five-run fifth inning did the trick in an 8-3 win over the Oakers.

East Providence scored two in the top of the fourth to take a one-run lead, but Coventry got an RBI single from Kelsey Knutton to tie things at two. The Townies changed the game in the fifth. Marianna Pina’s two-run single broke the tie and started a five-run rally that was helped by some Oaker defensive miscues.

Pina made sure the lead stuck. She threw all seven innings, spreading out seven hits and two walks while giving up two earned runs with five strikeouts. She helped her own cause at the plate, going 1-for-1 with three runs and two RBI.

Ava Silva and Maura Roche both drove home two runs in the win for East Providence.

Cranston West 14, Bay View 0

Freshman Alexa Okolowitcz had the best game of her young career, powering the Falcons offense in a 14-0 win over the Bengals.

Okolowitcz came up big early, following a Nicole Silvestri RBI single with a two-run double that was then followed by a Payton Wells two-run home run as part of a six-run first inning. In the second, Okolowitcz hit an RBI double that sparked another six-run inning and in the third, she hit a two-run blast for the game’s final runs.

When it was all said and done, Okolowitcz finished her night going 3-for-3 with five RBI and three runs. Wells and Ava Ianelli both drove home two runs and Emma Regine scored three runs. Ella Lamarre finished her night going 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI in the win. Silvestri also scored twice and drove in one.

Isabella Marcano threw two innings of two-hit ball before Bree Bedard finished off the final inning of the game that was shortened via the 12-run rule.

🥎SOFTBALL – Division III

Rogers 19, Cranston East 2

Tess Margolis was a monster in the middle of an order that hit, hit and hit some more in the Vikings’ 19-2 win over the Thunderbolts.

Rogers was on its game in the first inning, when Margolis got things rolling with an RBI single that sparked a three-run start. She added a three-run triple in the second as the Vikings put five runs in the second and in the third, hit a two-run double in a six-run inning.

Cranston East plated two runs in the fourth, but Rogers got five more in the fourth to bring the 12-run rule into play.

Margolis finished her day going 3-for-6 with six RBI and three runs. Lila Leys went 2-for-4 with three RBI and four runs and threw four innings of one-hit ball, giving up zero earned runs while striking out 10.

Charlotte Plowden drove home two runs and scored once and Jazelle Ramos drove in two as well. Alexandra Brown scored four times for Rogers, Emma Brown scored three times and Amelia Wallace had two runs in the win.

🥍BOYS LACROSSE – Division II

Westerly 10, Stonington 9

It was a back-and-forth affair all afternoon for the regional rivals, but Caleb Williams came up with the biggest shot of the day, scoring the game-winner in the second overtime to give the Bulldogs a 10-9 win over the Bears.

Westerly and Stonington put on a show, as neither team could get separation and the biggest lead any team held was 4-2 when Ian Morissette scored his second goal of the second quarter to give the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead.

The Bears led 6-5 at halftime and 9-8 after the third when Logan Unkuri tied the game with 11:11 left to play. Both defenses dominated the remainer of regulation and the first overtime until Williams – who scored Westerly’s first two goals – came up with the game-winner with 1:33 left in the second OT.

Williams and Morissette led the Bulldogs with three goals each and Evan Morisette scored two goals. Unkuri and Trystan Johnstone had the remaining goals for Westerly. Alex Mynuk had 11 saves in the win.

Westerly 17, Stonington 4

The Bulldogs got three goals from four different players as its offense was too much for the Bears to handle in a 17-4 win.

Westerly dominated their regional rival and it wasn’t hard to see why. Macy Antoch, Phoebe Brennan, Casey Macera and Ella Seltzer showed off the balanced Bulldog attack with three goals apiece.

Gianna Falcone scored twice and had four assists and Sienna Fizzano, Isabella Falcone and Hazel Gervasini scored one each for Westerly.

Vittoria Illiano had four saves in the win for the Bulldogs.
