As soon as McIlroy’s celebration was over, dozens of private jets left Augusta Regional Airport, according to Business Insider .
The Masters was one of the busiest weekends for private jet operators who transport the wealthiest of golf enthusiasts to and from the event via private terminals in Miami, Fla., and Teterboro, N.J.
Using data from private jet tracker site JetSpy , Business Insider logged 239 flights leaving Augusta Regional Airport following The Masters, with 123 planes departing even before McIlroy won the green jacket.
On Monday, hundreds more left the small regional airport, which charges up to US$4,000 in landing fees per plane.
Who owns the planes?
Some of the planes are owned by major corporations such as Bank of America, American Express, Nike, Chipotle, Goldman Sachs and IBM, and by billionaires such as ex-Walmart chairman Rob Walton and Workday co-founder David Duffield, the JetSpy data revealed.
Planes owned by the casino industry — MGM, the Seminole Tribe of Florida, and Hard Rock — also flew out of the Augusta airport.
A majority of the planes, Business Insider reported, were operated by charter companies such as NetJets, VistaJet and Wheels Up. The Masters allows these companies to connect with and market to wealthy clientele by offering perks such as private dinners, chances to meet golf pros, and dinners throughout the weekend.
Which jets were most popular?
The most popular jet to fly out of Augusta was the Cessna Citation Latitude, with 35 departures. The $20-million mid-size plane costs about $4,000 an hour to fly, Business Insider reported.
Second was the Embraer Phenom 300 at 24 flights. It’s the most flown aircraft in the United States by flight hours and is also the best-selling light jet.
The Gulfstream G650, a $65-million ultra-long range jet, was also popular with 10 departures.
JetSpy noted that two Gulfstream G700s flew out of the airport on Sunday. The $80-million plane is one of the latest private jets on the market.
