Giants’ Dexter Lawrence trade: New suitor emerges, as star tries to force his way out

Where could star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence land, if the Giants wind up trading him?

Well, you can count the Chargers — who have significant connections to the Giants — as a potential suitor.

Here’s what Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz said Thursday, when asked about possible interest in Lawrence: “I typically don’t like talking about players on other teams. You guys know that. I’ll say he’s a great player, and I’ll leave it at that.”

Meanwhile, Lawrence — who basically has no leverage — is trying to force his way out of East Rutherford.

Lawrence’s camp has made it known, via the New York Post, that his disagreements with the Giants (supposedly) are about more than just wanting a pay raise — and that Lawrence no longer wants to play for the organization, regardless of the financial situation.

Lawrence has two years left on his contract and is coming off a down year (by his standards). The Giants do not have to trade (or pay) him — and can hold out for a great trade offer. Meanwhile, they can fine Lawrence if he continues staying away past the voluntary part of spring workouts.

So yes, the Giants have a lot more leverage than Lawrence. Which is why Lawrence’s agent, Joel Segal, is trying to throw big punches by saying Lawrence is completely done with the Giants. Lawrence and Segal are using one of the few moves (such as it is) available to them.

The Giants team total wins line is set at 7.5 total games for the 2026-27 NFL season on BetMGM. Our complete BetMGM Sportsbook review shows you how to register and get started.

But ultimately, could that great trade offer come from the Chargers? They are, of course, coached by Jim Harbaugh, the brother of new Giants coach John Harbaugh. And Hortiz, now entering Year 3 as the Chargers’ GM, was in Baltimore alongside John Harbaugh before he got that bigger job.

With the 2026 NFL Draft set to begin next Thursday night — and the Giants coveting an immediate first-round pick for Lawrence — keep an eye on the Chargers, who pick 22nd in Round 1.
