One dead, one in custody in noon-hour North York shooting

Toronto Police say one person is dead and a suspect is in custody following a shooting in North York around the noon hour Thursday.

In a series of social media updates, police said officers responded to reports of a shooting shortly before 12:30 p.m. in the Marlee Ave. and Glengrove Ave. W. area, near Allen Rd. and Lawrence Ave. W.

When cops arrived at the scene, a victim was found with a gunshot wound and unknown injuries, cops said. A suspect was arrested at the scene.

A short time later, police said the injured individual had died at the scene .

The Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation.

No further information was made available.

Prayer walk held nearby

Just south of the shooting, a prayer walk was being held by Police Chief Myron Demkiw, Mayor Olivia Chow and faith leaders.

The walk, which began at 13 Division at noon and started from Eglinton Ave. W. and Allen Rd. before continuing west, also included police board chair Shelley Carroll, officers and community members.

Stops along the route included Beth Sholom Synagogue, John Howard Society, a non-profit organization that focuses on crime prevention and prison reform, and British Methodist Episcopal Church.

Police said Thursday’s walk is modelled after 23 Division’s Etobicoke Strategy where, for the past 21 years, officers and faith leaders make their way through neighbourhoods to meet community members, build relationships, and engage in prayer.
