Three big takeaways from UNC’s sweep of Pitt in home finale

· Yahoo Sports

North Carolina clinched the series sweep with a 7-3 victory over the Pitt Panthers on Sunday, closing out the final weekend of the season at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill.

The Tar Heels (40-9-1, 20-7 ACC) ended with a record of 28-6-1 at Boshamer this season. Their final regular-season home series showcased a mix of offensive fireworks and pitching duels, bookending Saturday’s offensive outburst with two tightly contested pitching battles.

Here are the top takeaways.

The streak continues

With the win, North Carolina picked up its 40th win of the season, the third straight season the Diamond Heels have done so.

The Diamond Heels finished 46-15 in 2025. In 2024, North Carolina went 48-16. Carolina’s 2024 season was highlighted by an appearance in the College World Series, but the 2025 team fell just short, losing the deciding game of the Chapel Hill Super Regional to Arizona.

Cooper Nicholson’s huge outing

Nicholson anchored the lineup all weekend. He had four hits in 11 at-bats, including two home runs that flipped momentum in UNC’s favor. His 13 homers this season lead the team and highlight the power surge that has helped drive the Tar Heels’ late-season push.

Pitching was excellent once again

Pitching was dominant once again for UNC. The Tar Heels held Pitt to just seven runs on 18 hits over the three-game series, surrendering six hits in each contest. That effort came against an offense that entered the weekend averaging nine runs per game — eighth nationally — and 10 hits per game.

Right-hander Jason DeCaro, left-hander Folger Boaz and reliever Caden Glauber led the way on the mound.

In UNC’s 4-1 win in Game 1, DeCaro worked five scoreless innings and struck out seven to earn the win and improve to 9-2. It was his second straight scoreless outing, and he has not allowed an earned run since April 17, when he gave up one in UNC’s 5-2 win over then-No. 2 Georgia Tech.

Boaz followed with a strong relief appearance, piling up a season-high eight strikeouts over three innings.

Glauber appeared in two of the three games, throwing a combined seven scoreless innings and allowing just two hits with six walks and seven strikeouts. He notched his fourth save of the season in Game 1 with five strikeouts over the final three innings. In Game 3, despite a shaky outing with five walks and two strikeouts, he earned the win to move to 7-0 on the year.
