Police say on Tuesday, around 4:10 p.m., officers responded to a call for an assault that had just occurred in the Weston Rd. and Lawrence Ave. W. area.

It’s alleged that an off-leash dog attacked a small breed dog and its adult owner and the small dog was killed as a result of the attack. The small dog’s owner suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Dog owner facing charges

The owner of the pit bull mix – Mohamoud Abdiwa Ahmed, 40, of Toronto – was arrested on Wednesday .

He’s charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm; obstructing, interrupting or interfering with the lawful use, enjoyment or operation of property; obstructing a peace officer; dog bite a person (Dog Owners’ Liability Act) and failure to prevent a dog from biting or attacking (Dog Owners’ Liability Act).

Ontario banned pit bulls in 2005 after two of them attacked a Toronto man, but in 2021 the provincial government eased off on some aspects of the regulations, allowing seized dogs that look like the prohibited breed to be released back to their owners while a breed designation was being conducted.
