Steelers’ Aaron Rodgers drops major revelation about Mike McCarthy hire

· Yahoo Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers completely flipped the NFL head coaching carousel on its head when Mike McCarthy was brought in as Mike Tomlin's replacement — and we may have Aaron Rodgers to thank for making it all possible.

Rodgers, who spoke with reporters during Wednesday's media availability, revealed that he suggested McCarthy as a potential successor for Tomlin to Steelers general manager Omar Khan.

"I had a conversation with Omar at the end of last year, and I encouraged him, for an outside perspective, to interview Mike [McCarthy]," Rodgers said. "Not thinking that he even would, honestly, just cause of how the league goes. … But when it became more serious, I was thinking, 'Wow, that would be a really interesting thought to come back and play with Mike.'"

Rodgers added that being able to play for more familiar coaches on the Steelers' current staff, like James Campen, Mark Lovat, and Grant Thorne, was also exciting.

Back in January, the Steelers interviewed McCarthy along with two other candidates — Brian Flores and Anthony Weaver — for the head coach vacancy after Tomlin stepped down following the 2025 season.

If the Steelers' first season under McCarthy works out, fans have Rodgers to thank for suggesting the offensive-minded guru. But if 2026 somehow fails to live up to fan expectations, Steelers Nation will almost certainly let him hear it.
