India’s taxation system is steadily moving towards greater digital compliance, transparency, and accountability, with technology-led reforms continuing to reshape tax administration and business processes, said Deepshikha Arora, IRS, Commissioner, CGST & Central Excise, Mumbai West, while addressing the CII Western Region Annual Conference on Taxation 2026 in Mumbai.

Referring to the growing adoption of e-invoicing, system-driven compliance, and real-time reporting mechanisms under GST, Arora said the next phase of tax administration would increasingly focus on improving transparency, reducing procedural gaps, and strengthening trust between taxpayers and authorities.

“The future of taxation would be driven by three important principles — transparency, technology, and trust. Technology will continue to deepen system-based compliance, transparency will reduce discretion and improve accountability, while trust will grow through timely and accurate compliance by taxpayers,” Arora said.

Sr Industry leaders and tax experts at the conference discussed key developments around GST compliance, policy interpretation, litigation trends, digital reporting systems, and the impact of regulatory changes on businesses across sectors.

The conference also highlighted the importance of continued dialogue between industry, policymakers, and tax authorities to improve clarity, address implementation challenges, and support a more stable and predictable taxation environment.
