Topsail boys keep postseason streak alive
The No. 2-seeded Pirates (20-4) are heading to the NCHSAA 7A state semifinals after defeating No. 3-seeded Holly Springs 9-1 in Round 4.
Topsail finished second in conference play this spring and will travel to Raleigh on Tuesday, May 26, to take on No. 1-seeded Cardinal Gibbons (19-5). Topsail has never made a lacrosse state championship appearance.
New Hanover girls historic season comes to a close
New Hanover girls lacrosse's best season in program history came to an end at the hands of visiting Cardinal Gibbons in the fourth round of the 7A state playoffs. The Wildcats kept the game dead even for nearly three quarters, but the Crusaders eventually pulled away to win 22-16.
New Hanover coach Avery Gerold Coley reflected on the historic season, which included New Hanover's first conference title, after the loss.
"I'm so proud," Gerold Coley said. "I think they shocked (Cardinal Gibbons), and we shocked ourselves in the process."
The Wildcats tied the game 8-8 just before the end of the first half after trailing by three early.
No New Hanover County girls lacrosse team has ever beaten Cardinal Gibbons, which has competed in the NCHSAA since 2005 as a non-boarding parochial private school. The Wildcats 16 goals are the most any Wilmington team has ever scored against the Raleigh school.
Hoggard girls fall in state semifinals
Hoggard's girls lacrosse team also competed for a regional championship Friday, but fell 15-9 to Apex. The Vikings put together one of their deepest playoff runs in recent years.
