Scouting report for new Cowboys WR reveals elusive, open space speed

· Yahoo Sports

The Cowboys' coaching staff was extra busy Monday morning. As the current roster finally kicked off Organized Team Activities for 2026, the offensive brain trust and front office were evaluating former SMU player Romello Brinson.

Following the weekend's departure of receiver Parris Campbell, who retired after seven seasons in the league, the team had a suddenly available roster spot. They officially signed Brinson, who had previously tried out for the Miami Dolphins but was not offered a contract back in April. Last season's stats with the SMU Mustangs, saw him achieve 43 receptions for 638 yards and three touchdowns.

Here's a look at what the Cowboys might be getting this summer.

Strengths

One of the first aspects that stands out about Brinson when watching tape is his remarkable length and rapid vertical acceleration. He moves effectively as a long-strider, employing strong acceleration to close the gap on a cornerback's cushion and outmaneuver defenders downfield, a skill that was clearly evident during his dynamic performance against Baylor.

His wingspan enables him to keep physical press corners at bay, but he must demonstrate more consistent play strength at the catch point in closely contested situations. Brinson presents exciting potential after making the catch. Once he reaches full speed, he becomes elusive in open space and has the balance to fend off the first tackler. Nevertheless, his ability to transition out of breaks on intermediate routes is still developing, which makes him ideally suited as a perimeter field-stretcher initially, or a target on fast-crossing routes against zone coverage.

Weaknesses

On account of Brinson's slimmer build, there are moments when physical defenders exploit his frame, closing in on his routes. While he does possess a decent catch radius, he often finds it challenging to win 50/50 balls, leading to a restricted route tree. This is evident when he runs curl or stop routes, allowing defenders to close in on him. Additionally, at his immediate break points, he tends to stand too upright, which can result in unnecessary steps to gain separation.

Where does he fit on the Cowboys?

Brinson's quest to secure a spot on the 53-man roster is going to be a challenging one, given the talented receivers competing behind the big three: CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, and Ryan Flournoy.

The mix includes both veterans, like Kavonte Turpin, the fan-favorite Traeshon Holden, Jonathan Mingo, Tyler Johnson, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, along with rookie Anthony Smith and his former SMU teammate Jordan Hudson. He needs to excel with his vertical threat capability, create plays with pre-snap motions, and most importantly, contribute on special teams. He is eyeing the WR5, WR6 position and the backup Z receiver role.
