Wemby Up, Chet Down, Fonseca Next?

Congratulations to Victor Wembanyama. The dude won the Western Conference Finals MVP at just 22 years old, and if he ends up toppling the Knicks and winning the NBA Finals, then it all but officially becomes “his” league.

He’s it. A generational talent. The next is here. You know, all those things.

I think we’re beyond “is now the time to invest” in Wemby, for those who haven’t yet. His market has been insane. He’s already in the $5M club. It’s going to be really, really fun to watch what he does next.

This is my friendly reminder that while yes his Prizm base rookie is his most highly sought after base rookie and will cost you over $400, the Prizm Deca card in a PSA 10 is still under $300.

The difference between those two cards is that the Prizm base has over 27,000 graded PSA 10’s, while the Deca Prizm has only 900 PSA 10’s. That’s not a lot of supply. But, what do I know?

Speaking of… A new “generational talent” has entered the building. Welcome to the mix, Joao Fonseca. The 19-year-old Brazilian tennis player is best known for his comeback victory over one of the all-time greats, Novak Djokovic, in the French Open this past weekend. He later punched his ticket to the Quarter Finals with a super impressive win over 15th-ranked Casper Ruud.

As a result, his cards have started to pop off. His /50 Blue Refractor rookie card was going for around $50 a month ago and is now up over $200.

His “true” rookie card exists in the 2026 Topps Graphite set, and as of now it’s the only officially licensed card for the young Brazilian. He also has Topps Now cards in the market, but the Graphite set includes autos, short prints, base and parallel rookies.

Also, that Graphite hobby box sold so poorly that it was doing well under $200 on the secondary market just a week ago. Now? People have been hit with Fonseca madness, baby, and even the prices of the boxes are starting to pump!

I will say this: “we” do this a lot. In every sport. And mostly we get it wrong. And, remember, Carlos Alcaraz missed the French Open and Jannik Sinner was upset early. Not to take away from what Fonseca did against Djokovic, but he’s had a fairly easy path thus far in the French Open.

Fittingly, NETPRO just announced they are releasing a limited edition set of his “rookie” cards this summer. You might be familiar with NETPRO as the folks who were early to the game, releasing the Carlos Alcaraz “true” rookie card back in 2022 which fetches a huge return. But that was before Topps got back into the tennis game. Now, Topps beat NETPRO to the punch with their Fonseca cards hitting the market first.

I’m not saying he’s not the next generational talent in tennis, but mostly I’m just saying we’ll be here a year from now crowning another 19-year-old as “next.”

One of the most underrated cards, as far as I’m concerned, is the Kobe Bryant 1998-99 Fleer Tradition. Why is it underrated? Well because the card shows him dunking on Michael Jordan.

You don’t typically see MJ disrespected like that. The card also has a relatively low “pop” - and you can find the PSA 10 (of which there are only 115 copies) for under $1,000. Kobe is dunking on Jordan!!!!

People are pissed because PSA has announced that they are pausing their Value grading tiers indefinitely. They are, apparently, in a backlog by—puts glasses on—10 million cards?! There shouldn’t be 10 million cards graded, period, let alone sitting in a “backlog.”

They are doing us all a favor. Your Nico Hoerner cards should not be graded. None of them. Not a single one. We don’t need every card ever to be graded. PSA is doing us a favor by not letting us send our garbage cards in to be graded.

That said, shout out to Nico Hoerner who I’m sure is very nice and deserving of being graded by his friends and family. I imagine they would all say he’s a Gem on good days and Near-Mint on bad ones.

I guess it’s a long time coming, but game-worn jerseys—like the actual jersey, not the little pieces they put in the cards—are starting to pop off. A Paige Bueckers game-worn jersey sold for over $64,000 this weekend.

That’s a record for a WNBA jersey.

Are Disney cards the “next Pokemon” cards? Methinks these gentlemen are making a strong case.

Shorter print runs, lowering supply – there’s a lot to like about Disney cards. Although I will say, and have said, they need to find a way to diversify the imagery on the cards.

Finally, I know it’s fun and funny to clown on the Chet Holmgren card market after his abysmal showing in the WCF and I know how much fun everyone is having at his expense and I just wanted to say: keep at it. Don’t stop.
