This comes as the national team will return to the tournament as a qualifying nation after last participating as the host country.

Ironically, history will repeat itself as SA and Mexico play their opening match – as they did 16 years ago at Soccer City (now FNB Stadium).

On X, various X accounts have reposted the results of a Sports Bible poll, which named South Africa and the 2010 FIFA World Cup as the “Greatest World Cup of all time”.

The news has been lapped up by the Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie.

The poll was undertaken by readers of the Sport Bible, which falls under the LADBible Group of digital publishers.

According to the results, the Top 10 tournaments and host countries are as follows.

1. 2010 – South Africa

2. 2014 – Brazil

3. 2022 – Qatar

4. 2006 – Denmark

5. 1998 – France

6. 1986  – Mexico

7. 2018 – Russia

8. 1970 – Mexico

Uruguay’s Diego Forlan said: “My best years were 2010 and 2011, and the 2010 World Cup was the most incredible experience. Our tiny nation reached the semi-finals, I finished joint-top scorer in South Africa, and my goal against Germany was voted the best of the tournament. I was also named the best player of that World Cup”.
