The Brazilian Football Confederation has released a positive update regarding Neymar’s ongoing rehabilitation after suffering a calf injury in May.

The 34-year-old record Brazilian goal scorer hasn’t represented his country since he made his 128th appearance back in October 2023. Plagued by a litany of injuries of late, the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward appears to be on track to make it to the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

In a statement, the Confederation said of Neymar’s MRI, via ESPN, “The exam showed good progress in his treatment, within expected parameters.

“He will continue the recovery and physical preparation process planned by the Brazilian National Team's medical staff.”

Neymar was one of several veterans called up by Carlo Ancelotti for what will be the legendary coach’s first-ever World Cup as boss, with the Italian also selecting Casemiro and Alex Sandro among others.

Assuming Neymar’s progression continues at its current rate, he’ll provide another option up front for Ancelotti alongside starman Vinícius Júnior, while Luiz Henrique, Matheus Cunha, Gabriel Martinelli, Igor Thiago, Endrick, and Rayan are also available.

One player Ancelotti had initially called up but who will no longer be available for selection is full back Wesley, who has had to withdraw after picking up an injury to his left thigh.

In a statement on Sunday, the Confederation said, “The MRI scan revealed a muscle injury in the adductor muscle of the left thigh.

“The CBF regrets the injury. Wesley is a beloved player within the group and will always be considered part of this team that is seeking its sixth world championship.

“In light of the diagnosis, the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) announces the call-up of player Éderson, who will join the delegation this Monday in the United States.”

Éderson’s call-up comes during a summer in which the Atalanta midfielder is largely expected to make a move to Manchester United, helping fill the void left behind by Casemiro’s exit.

While he has yet to undergo a medical for the Red Devils, according to the Manchester Evening News, a deal worth an initial $46.7 million has been agreed to. The 26-year-old is set to join on a four-year deal, with an option for a further year included.

Éderson joins the Brazilian national team having only previously made three appearances since his debut back in 2024, with his most recent appearance coming off the bench in a 4-1 loss to Argentina last March.

His first opportunity to make an impact will be in Brazil’s World Cup opener on Saturday, when they take on Africa Cup of Nations champions Morocco in Group C at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Next up will be Haiti on June 19 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, before closing out the group stage against Scotland on June 24 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida.
