Food parcels for the unemployed? SASSA responds
· The South African

A flyer claiming that the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is distributing food parcels to unemployed South Africans and mothers with more than one child is spreading rapidly on social media, but SASSA says it is fake.

The fraudulent post, shared by a Facebook page called “Youth of Tsomo Jobs,” uses the official SASSA logo and branding to make the offer appear legitimate. It claims parcels containing rice, sugar, cooking oil, maize meal, baked beans and instant porridge are available on 14 June.
What the fake food parcel flyer claims
The flyer instructs people to apply via a Google Sites link and a WhatsApp number (060 924 0092), and directs them to a third-party website, careerjobza.co.za, which has no affiliation with SASSA. It also prompts users to click “Accept” or “Decline,” a tactic commonly used to harvest personal information from unsuspecting victims.
SASSA has confirmed the flyer does not come from the agency and forms no part of any official programme.

How scammers are targeting vulnerable South Africans
Fraudsters are deliberately using SASSA’s branding, colours and logo to exploit unemployed South Africans and grant beneficiaries who are desperate for assistance. By timing the offer around a specific date and targeting mothers and the unemployed, scammers are casting a wide net to reach the most vulnerable members of society.
SASSA never distributes food parcels through WhatsApp numbers, Google Sites links, or unofficial social media pages. Any offer of this nature is fraudulent.
What you should do
SASSA is urging the public to ignore the flyer, delete it without engaging, and avoid clicking any links or sharing personal information with unknown contacts.
Anyone who has already responded or submitted personal details through the link or WhatsApp number should contact SASSA immediately on the toll-free number 0800 60 10 11, Monday to Friday during working hours.
Always verify information through SASSA’s official website at sassa.gov.za before responding to any offer.
