Sean McVay has seen 'tremendous growth' from Stetson Bennett this offseason

All eyes are on Ty Simpson as the backup quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams, but Stetson Bennett is still on the team and he plans to keep it that way. The former fourth-round pick took time off as a rookie in 2023 but he made the 53-man roster as the third quarterback in each of the last two years.

Entering his fourth season with the Rams, he’ll be competing with Simpson for the QB2 spot and so far, he’s gotten off to a strong start in OTAs. Sean McVay has been impressed and proud of Bennett’s development so far, while also noting that Simpson has had “good growth,” too.
“I’ve seen tremendous growth,” McVay said of Bennett on Monday. “Obviously, with Matthew not being out here based on the plan and the schedule that we’ve kind of thought was going to be best for him for now and for the long term, Stetson’s gotten a lot more reps than he would’ve otherwise. I think he’s done a really nice job. He’s earning the confidence of his teammates in terms of commanding the huddle. Then, he’s done a lot of good stuff in terms of reading with his feet. Dave Ragone does such a good job with those guys as a whole but both he and Ty have had good growth. Stetson especially, I think he’s had a really good last couple of weeks, and I’ve been proud of him.”
Bennett impressed last preseason and earned himself a spot on the team behind Stafford and Jimmy Garoppolo. With Garoppolo still a free agent and contemplating retirement, the door is open for Bennett to remain with the Rams, even after Los Angeles drafted Simpson.
It’s conceivable that the Rams could keep three quarterbacks for the third year in a row, allowing Bennett and Simpson both to develop as backups behind Stafford. Clearly, Simpson is the future and a potential successor to Stafford, but Bennett still brings value as a backup – and possibly even as a trade chip if a team is looking for a QB2 down the line.
