Auburn junior Ja'Kobe Tharp, no stranger to success in Eugene, opened his NCAA men's 110-meter hurdles title defense chase by setting a new world record in his semifinal heat June 10 of 12.75 seconds, besting Aries Merritt's previous world record of 12.80 set in 2012.

Tharp said he felt fast running the race and he planned on giving his 100%, but was shocked at the result.

The reigning outdoor NCAA champion in the 110 hurdles and runner-up in 2024 warmed up for the hurdles Wednesday helping the Tigers' 4x100 relay set a new collegiate record in their prelim race of 37.75.

Tharp will run in the final at 5:42 p.m. Friday.
