Real Madrid have been looking for a left-footed central defender to reinforce their backline this season. Another requirement would be for the player to be able to also play at left-back.

Real Madrid were also looking at Riccardo Calafiori as an option, but that option is no longer advancing, according to Romano.

Gvardiol has, in the last few days, become a concrete option for the Spanish capital, with the player also being aware of the interest from the Spanish club.

Manchester City have offered him a long-term contract and want to keep him, and the only two options that the Croatian defender has are to either renew and stay in Manchester, or to go to Real Madrid.

It is an interesting transfer saga to follow, as Gvardiol would raise the defense’s ceiling if he ends up joining Los Blancos.
