South Africa is mourning the loss of celebrated artist Portchie, who has passed away at the age of 62.

Born on 23 November 1963, Portchie died on 12 June 2026, leaving behind a legacy that extends far beyond the canvas.

Portchie was born and raised in the Free State, and matriculated in 1981 from Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch.

Touched countless lives

The news of his passing was shared in an emotional tribute from family and friends, who described him as a beloved brother, mentor and friend whose influence touched countless lives.

“It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our beloved brother, mentor and friend,” the statement read.

Portchie was widely admired not only for his colourful and distinctive artworks, but also for his faith, generosity and passion for life.

“He touched countless lives through his faith, his art, his kindness, his wisdom, and his unwavering passion for life,” the tribute continued.

Contemporary artist

Over the course of his career, Portchie became one of South Africa’s most recognisable contemporary artists, earning a devoted following both locally and internationally. His vibrant works, often depicting everyday life, landscapes and joyful scenes, became synonymous with optimism and warmth.

Those closest to him said his legacy would endure through both his artistic contributions and the many people he inspired throughout his life.

An avid cyclist, Portchie was also known for his love of life and motivational outlook. One of his favourite sayings reflected his philosophy:

“Fietsry is soos die lewe – hoe harder jy trap hoe meer kry jy daar uit.”

Translated into English, the quote reads: “Cycling is like life – the harder you pedal, the more you get out of it.”
