REMINDER | Monday, 15 June is a ‘special’ school holiday

· The South African

Pupils across South Africa are set to enjoy a welcome mid-term break next week, with Monday, 15 June, officially designated as a special school holiday ahead of Youth Day celebrations.

The additional holiday means learners will benefit from a four-day weekend, with schools having closed on Friday afternoon and reopening only on Wednesday, 17 June.

The break comes as the second school term enters its final stretch before the June-July holidays.

Two-Day Holiday for Learners

The Department of Basic Education’s (DBE) 2026 school calendar confirms that Monday, 15 June, has been set aside as a special school holiday, while Tuesday, 16 June, is observed nationally as Youth Day.

As a result, pupils and teachers will have two consecutive weekdays away from school.

The timing provides a welcome pause during what has been a busy second term for learners across the country.

June-July Holidays Around the Corner

Despite the brief interruption, the second term is scheduled to continue until Friday, 26 June.

Schools will then close for the June-July holidays, with learners returning for the start of the third term on Tuesday, 21 July.

The holiday period will span just over three weeks before pupils head back to classrooms for the third academic term.

Term three will run from 21 July until 23 September, before schools close again for the September holidays.

Matric Exams Nearing Completion

For Grade 12 learners writing the National Senior Certificate (NSC) June examinations, the assessment period is also drawing to a close.

The final examination session is scheduled for Tuesday, 23 June.

The June examinations form part of the broader matric assessment programme ahead of the final NSC examinations later in the year.

More Public Holidays Ahead

The third term will include another public holiday break when National Women’s Day is observed on 9 August, with the public holiday falling on Monday, 10 August, due to the date occurring on a Sunday.

Learners will then return for the final weeks of the term before schools close on 23 September.
