When Real Madrid appointed a manager like Jose Mourinho, they would have known that the Portuguese legend would ask the club for specific signings to suit his style.

Florentino Perez has done a very good job of getting him the players he wants so far, signing the likes of Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate, Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva.

Now, according to AS, Mourinho pushed hardest for Bernardo and asked Real Madrid to do everything possible to bring him in, with the club then moving quickly to finalise the signing.

The Portuguese midfielder has agreed a two-year contract with Real Madrid, with an option for one more year depending on appearances.

He can play as an attacking midfielder, wide creator or interior, and that gives Real Madrid more ways to manage difficult games.

At 31, this is not a signing about resale value or long-term development. It is about immediate quality. Real Madrid already have explosive talent, but Bernardo brings pause, rhythm and decision-making in the final third.

Mourinho values his versatility, experience, leadership and winning mentality. This squad has brilliance, but every great team also needs players who can slow the chaos down and make the right pass under pressure.

A smart move, not just a famous name

Bernardo’s arrival would also make sense because Real Madrid are entering a phase where balance may matter as much as star power.

His age means Los Blancos must manage the physical side carefully, and he should not block younger players who need room to grow. But on a short contract, this looks like an unbelievable deal.

Mourinho is also sending a message through such signings. He wants a certain kind of mentality in the dressing room, and Bernardo embodies it better than most people.

The most interesting part is how quickly Real Madrid appear to have acted once Mourinho insisted. That suggests the club are willing to shape the squad around his ideas, at least in key areas.

Real Madrid cannot afford a half-built project. If Mourinho is the man chosen to lead the next stage, then giving him players who fit his football is the only serious approach.

Bernardo may not be the youngest or flashiest move of the summer, but he could be one of the most useful, and this could go down as one of the deals of the transfer window.
