CBI questions ex-Trinamool Congress MLA in Kolkata doctor’s rape and murder case

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday questioned former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh in connection with the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in 2024, The Hindu reported.

Ghosh appeared before the agency at its office in Kolkata’s New Town area after being summoned for questioning, The Statesman reported.

Last month, the doctor’s mother, Ratna Debnath, now a BJP MLA from Panihati, approached a Sealdah court seeking action against Ghosh, Trinamool Congress councillor Sanjib Mukhopadhyay and party functionary Somnath Das.

According to unidentified officials, Ghosh was questioned about allegations made by the doctor’s family that he and his associates attempted to hasten the cremation and prevent a second post-mortem examination. The family has also alleged that the cremation took place without the necessary documents being handed over to them.

On Thursday, CBI officers also visited the crematorium in Panihati where the doctor was cremated, PTI reported.

Debnath said the CBI’s recent actions had revived her “hope for justice” for her daughter, The Hindu reported.

She alleged that while the family was at Tala police station on August 10, 2024 awaiting a second post-mortem, they received information that Ghosh, Das and Mukhopadhyay had already taken the body back to their home and were preparing to move it to the crematorium.
