I'm in a weird boat when it comes to De'Aaron Fox and the San Antonio Spurs.
I fully recognize that the Spurs might have won an NBA Finals had Fox been the player that everybody expected him to be, averaging 18.6 points per game in the regular season while playing in 72 games. His three-point shot continues to be very below average, shooting just 33.2% on 5.5 attempts per game, but he was the lead guard and played well more often than not.
We seriously have to remember that this is a guy who played 72 games, and the Spurs won 62 games throughout the year.
There's something to be said about that, even if the NBA Finals didn't go as planned.
While that's my belief, others aren't in the same boat, with many suggesting that he should be traded. One trade idea would send him to the Toronto Raptors for a decent return, and one that San Antonio might consider.
“The best way for the Spurs to trade Fox is to try and break up his contract by receiving multiple players in return for him. Or, to seek out similarly bad contracts with fewer years remaining.
“As a result, a proposed trade would see the Spurs acquire Brandon Ingram and Jakob Poeltl. In exchange, they'd trade Fox, the 20th and 35th picks in this year's draft, the Atlanta Hawks' 2027 first, and a 2028 second-round pick via the New Orleans Pelicans,” Cal Durrett wrote.
Ending up with Brandon Ingram and Jakob Poeltl wouldn't be a bad outcome for the Spurs.
I'm not the biggest fan of Ingram's game, but he's not a bad player by any means. I feel like he's somewhat similar to Fox in being a guy who might not be good enough to win a championship with, so I'd probably pass on this deal.
