Their connection extended beyond the court as well, with the two stars enjoying a team golf outing during the Lakers’ 9-game winning streak in March, creating memorable moments away from basketball.
Luka Dončić Opens Up About Playing Golf With LeBron James
What began as a simple team-building activity during a road trip, organized by head coach JJ Redick, has since evolved into a major off-court passion for both Dončić and James. The golf outing also included Austin Reaves and Bronny James, and the experience quickly sparked a shared enthusiasm for the sport.
Recently, Dončić was asked whether he and James had ever played a head-to-head game of golf.
“We played once or twice,” Dončić replied. “Right now a bit harder cause we ain’t close, but… Like you’re in nature for 4 hours, sometimes even 8 hours. I play 36 holes, which they say is not smart, but I still play it… You’re in nature, no phone, peace. Something most beautiful.”
The Lakers are coming off a disappointing 2025-26 season that ended with a second-round sweep at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Meanwhile, James remains one of the most notable free agents on the market despite entering his age-42 season and a record-setting 24th year in the NBA.
According toESPN’s Dave McMenamin, the prospect of taking on a complementary role alongside Dončić and Austin Reaves is not expected to discourage James from potentially returning to Los Angeles.
As for Dončić, he missed the Lakers’ playoff run after suffering a Grade 2 strain in his left hamstring. He is now fully recovered, has resumed offseason training, and is preparing for another season in the prime of his career.
There is little uncertainty about the Slovenian’s future with the franchise as the team looks to build around him.
Dončić has traditionally represented Slovenia during NBA offseasons, often suiting up for the national team.

However, he has chosen to sit out international competition this season and spend more time at home in Slovenia with his daughters, Gabriela and Olivia.
“We already know that I won’t play for the national team,” Dončićtold per Siol. “The main reason is my daughters. Everything else is pretty much the same. I’m doing individual workouts, training in the gym, and also playing other sports.”
Dončić’s injury derailed what could otherwise have been a monstrous season, as he was leading the league in scoring with 33.5 points per game.
The Lakers enter a crucial offseason with more than half the roster set to hit free agency, and their roster decisions will heavily influence the team they return to next season.
