The news was first reported by TMZ.

According to the report, Poirier was arrested Sunday evening and later released after 10 p.m. ET. Details of the arrest and the circumstances that led to it are not yet available. The 37-year-old retired fighter made an initial court appearance Monday morning.

Poirier retired in July 2025 following a battle for the “BMF” belt against longtime rival Max Holloway in a headlining spot. Holloway won a unanimous decision and Poirier laid down his gloves to signal he had fought for the final time. In 41 pro bouts, Poirier compiled a 30-10 (1 NC) record and held an interim lightweight title, while also challenging for the undisputed title three times.

During his decorated UFC career, Poirier earned wins over Holloway (twice), Conor McGregor (twice), Justin Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez, Anthony Pettis, and several other notable names at both 155 and 145 pounds. Though Poirier has spoken frequently about missing competition, he has made no overtures to a comeback.

In the state of Georgia, public drunkenness carries a punishment of up to one year in jail or up to $1,000 in fines, or both.
