Over the weekend, it was announced that Rays outfielder Theo Gillen will be promoted to Double-A Montgomery Biscuits beginning on Tuesday.

Many industry rankings are high on Gillen’s game, but his spot in the rankings is not in a common area. MLB Pipeline rates the Rays top prospect as the 40th across all farm systems. However, Baseball America views him as the 12th best player inside their top 100.

Across 57 games with High-A Bowling Green this season, he hit .342/.449/.589 with 12 home runs and picked up 28 stolen bases. Many prospect experts project him to be able to peak at the Major League level as a 25 homer, 25 steals type of player.

In other terms, perennial All-Star caliber.

Gillen’s emerging power is one of the biggest reasons for his massive jumps up many prospect rankings this summer. He has also shown great plate discipline for his age. He is showing all the right tools to ensure this isn’t the last time he is promoted inside this farm system.

After dealing with a knee issue to begin his minor league career, Gillen has rebounded nicely inside the Rays system. As a good number of players inside his 2024 MLB Draft class are beginning to make a name for themselves at the Major League level, Gillen has had to overcome a few things, but it hasn’t changed how he is viewed inside the organization.

He could potentially find himself making one more step up to Triple A before the season is over if his time in Montgomery goes well over the summer. Regardless, we should be seeing him in a prime position competing for a job on the big club next spring training.

He will get his Double-A debut at home in Montgomery as the Biscuits host the Biloxi Shuckers all week, beginning on Tuesday at Dabos Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 PM EST.
