The New York Mets have lost five consecutive games. According to a new report, they’re about to lose infielder Marcus Semien to the injured list for the first time this season.

Chelsea Janes of SNY reported June 25 that the 35-year-old second baseman is expected to go on the IL this afternoon, ostensibly before their game against the Chicago Cubs.

Semien has managed to avoid the IL this season, his first in Queens, but that makes him exceptional in a lost season for the Mets. First baseman Jorge Polanco is currently recovering from a wrist contusion. Shortstop Francisco Lindor missed all of May with a strained calf.

At 34-46, the Mets are 14.5 games out of first place in the National League East with the season not quite halfway over.

Semien has hardly been effective even when healthy, slashing .214/.271/.341 — on pace for career lows in each category.

Acquired from the Texas Rangers primarily for his glove, Semien has been charged with six errors in 80 games this season, four more than he made in 127 games at second base last year with the Texas Rangers. He committed two of the Mets’ six errors as a team in their June 24 loss to the Cubs.

Semien came to New York in a November 2025 trade that sent outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Rangers.

Although he’s hardly the only reason the Mets have struggled, Semien has done little to endear himself to his new fan base.
