Manuel Neuer is one of greatest goalkeepers of all time, if not the best ever himself.

Neuer absolutely revolutionized the position as a sweeper keeper, has made some of the greatest saves of all time, and his long-standing dominance in goal has resulted in winning virtually every award possible. However, that version of Neuer does not exist anymore.

Neuer in 2026, is a mistake-prone goalkeeper that is far past his best. Without disrespect, he simply has taken a major step back in recent years. Even with some vintage Neuer performances this past season, he cannot be trusted as a starting goalkeeper of the national team. Julian Nagelsmann not only made a mistake by calling up a goalkeeper who is not the best choice, but also undermines the work of Oliver Baumann who has been mostly great as Germany’s starter over the last year or so.

Neuer had a poor performance against Ecuador in Germany’s 2-1 defeat with a clear mistake on the second goal, and when he was confronted by a report about the mistake, had an interesting response.

“No. Because it’s a perfectly normal headed flick-on, and I’m just trying to catch the ball. It’s a completely normal situation. Any goalkeeper who has ever played the game knows that I have to position myself like that for the ball, and that I have to try and catch it exactly like that. There’s a header, and you try to get to the ball. Of course, it looks unfortunate because I’m standing right there, but it wasn’t a mistake on my part… Well, how else am I supposed to stand there? Am I supposed to dive even though the ball is coming straight at me? I have to move towards the ball and try to catch it. If someone puts a foot in and it flies past me, then it flies past me. But I have to position myself like that. There’s no other option. I can’t just evaporate,” Neuer stated, as captured by @iMiaSanMia.

While many people will be quick to criticize the legendary goalkeeper, it certainly didn’t look good, no matter how you try to spin it. Was Neuer to blame for the second goal? Jonathan Tah surely didn’t do much to help but there is a real crisis for Germany at the moment, and if not corrected, will surely cost Germany an early exit.
