For France, as a two-time World Cup winner, their 2026 run has been all about the star power and dominant history in the international event. Kylian Mbappe has led the way as France has pursued its third World Cup trophy.

Morocco, on the other hand, has been making World Cup history in recent years, making a run to the semifinals in 2022 as the first African nation to ever reach that round. Now, Morocco is back in the quarterfinals — and as it turns out, France once again stands in its way of making a deep World Cup run.

Here's a look at the history of matchups between France and Morocco, including their meeting at the 2022 World Cup.

France vs. Morocco history

France and Morocco have played one another on six previous occasions, but only once in the World Cup and twice overall in the past 20 years.

Of the six previous meetings between the countries on the international stage, two were also friendlies. So, heading into the 2026 World Cup quarterfinals, France-Morocco has previously seen four truly competitive matchups, but only one of them can match the stakes of the upcoming game.

France and Morocco first played one another at the 1988 Tournoi de France, where Les Blues claimed a 2-1 victory, while they've also met in the King Hassan II Cup.

Thanks to their 2022 World Cup matchup, however, it's become more of an interesting rivalry in recent years.

In the all-time series, France holds the advantage with four wins to Morocco's one, while they've also tied once.

Removing the friendly results, a 1999 1-0 France win and a 2007 draw, and Les Blues still holds the advantage at 3-1.

The teams, heading into their 2026 World Cup quarterfinals matchup, have met just once on the World Cup stage, and it's certainly familiar in fans' minds — France won 2-0 in the 2022 World Cup semifinals.

Last France vs. Morocco match

The last time France and Morocco met also had massive stakes at the World Cup.

Coming into 2022, France and Morocco had never met in the World Cup. But as Morocco made history at Qatar, becoming the first African nation to ever reach the semifinals, they ran into a dominant opponent.

Playing at Al Bayt Stadium with a trip to the 2022 World Cup final on the line, France secured a victory thanks to an early goal from Theo Hernandez in the fifth minute, then another from Randal Kolo Muani in the 79th minute.

Ultimately, France went on to fall to Argentina in the final on penalties, while Morocco lost the third-place game to Croatia, finishing in fourth.
