The South African Football Association (SAFA) has dismissed reports claiming that Hugo Broos has stepped down as head coach of Bafana Bafana, insisting the Belgian remains in charge of the national team.

SAFA described the reports as “completely false”, reaffirming that Broos continues as head coach following South Africa’s historic campaign at FIFA World Cup 2026.
The speculation emerged just days after Bafana Bafana returned from the global showpiece in the United States, Mexico and Canada, where the team made history by reaching the knockout stages of the tournament for the first time.
Hugo Broos remains in charge
According to SAFA, Hugo Broos has not resigned and has not left his position despite widespread speculation linking him with an exit.
It is not the first time the 74-year-old has been the subject of rumours following a successful international tournament.
In March 2024, shortly after guiding South Africa to a bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, reports suggested he was set to take over as Tunisia’s head coach.
Those claims were also denied.
Historic World Cup achievement
Hugo Broos further enhanced his reputation after leading Bafana Bafana to their best-ever FIFA World Cup performance.
South Africa secured a place in the Round of 32 for the first time after defeating South Korea 1-0 in their final Group A match in Monterrey, Mexico.
The achievement marked another milestone for Broos, who has transformed the national team since taking charge in 2021, leading them to AFCON bronze before overseeing their breakthrough on football’s biggest stage.
Coach on leave in Belgium
SAFA confirmed that Hugo Broos is currently spending time at his home in Belgium following the World Cup.
He is expected to return to South Africa later this month to resume preparations for Bafana Bafana’s upcoming international fixtures.
With SAFA moving quickly to quash the speculation, the focus now shifts to building on South Africa’s historic World Cup campaign under the guidance of the experienced Belgian coach.
