Nets' Chaney Johnson explains what's working during summer league

LAS VEGAS -- Brooklyn Nets forward Chaney Johnson is heading into his second season in the NBA and for now, he's working on preparing to be the best Two-Way player on the roster. Brooklyn has been evaluating how Egor Demin and Mikel Brown Jr. look against NBA competition, but Johnson is showing that he is looking for more than just minutes in the G League.

"All glory to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He just fuels me with everything I need. I kind of do be nervous coming into games, but I be praying with my trainer and even praying on the bench," Johnson said after Saturday's 83-76 loss to the Atlanta Hawks in the Las Vegas Summer League. Johnson finished the contest with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals in 32 minutes, all while playing out of position as the team's starting center.

"He just kind of calms me and just gives me everything I need to go out there and play hard. I feel like my main goal is just to be the hardest playing player out there," Johnson continued. "I just hang my hat on going out there and playing hard and just controlling everything I can control."

Johnson, 24, is coming off. a 2025-26 season in which he averaged 8.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 54.3% from the field and 30.0% from behind the three-point line. He played in just 17 NBA games as he spent the majority of the season playing for Long Island, Brooklyn's G League team, where he showed that he had some potential of being an NBA player based on his skillset and attributes.

Nets summer league coach Dutch Gaitley has acknowledged that Johnson is playing out of position given that he's listed at 6-foot-7 and 220 pounds, but he gives Johnson more credit for being able to do what he's asked to do while excelling at it. Johnson is doing whatever he can to make an impact and for those wondering how he's doing what he's doing, he just says that he's playing hard and letting the rest take care of itself.
