Southern Miss baseball outfielder Joey Urban was picked by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2026 MLB Draft on July 12.

He was the No. 282 overall pick in the ninth round with a slot value of $202,100.

Urban was the first Southern Miss player to be selected in this year's MLB draft.

The 6-foot, 198-pound Urban is from Jupiter, Florida, and played two seasons for the Golden Eagles. Before transferring to Southern Miss, Urban spent two seasons at Butler and was a first-team All-Big East selection in 2024.

Urban played in 61 games in 2026 and started all of them, finishing with a .320 batting average, 78 hits and 55 RBIs. He displayed more power in 2026, increasing his home run total from nine in 2025 to 15. Urban also showed good plate discipline, walking 38 times.

He was a strong defensive presence in center field, committing zero errors and contributing four assists. He put his athletic ability on display several times at Southern Miss with highlight-worthy catches in the outfield. Urban had a 1.000% fielding percentage in two seasons with the Golden Eagles.

Urban hit second in the lineup and was a reliable bat, but he had an excellent end to the 2026 season, contributing 10 RBIs in the last five games. Thanks to his strong play down the stretch, Urban was named the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Player.

During his first season with the Golden Eagles, Urban hit .333 with 27 RBIs.
