The apparent random attack took place around 8 a.m. on July 2, across the street from the Oklahoma City Police Department’s headquarters.
Sequence of nightmarish events
Disturbing surveillance video released by authorities on Facebook on July 7 first shows the wheelchair user crossing in the middle of the intersection while a pedestrian carrying what appears to be a white plastic bag is seen nearby crossing the street in a different direction.
The pedestrian does a quick about-face, approaches the victim and appears to stop in the intersection to light something before allegedly hurling the incendiary device at the man in the wheelchair.
The victim was set ablaze in the video, after which he is seen trying to move from the fire, but the sick suspect appears to return to him and push his chair back into the flames.
Bystanders, including OKCPD detectives, ran to help the victim and pull him away from the fire, police said.
One of the officers took down the suspect and detained him at the scene.
Police added in the news release that Oklahoma City Fire Department also arrived at the scene to “provide crucial medical aid.”
Motive behind attack
Facebook users were curious to know if it was a random attack, while another questioned if the victim said something to the suspect before the horrifying incident took place.
Others, however, were more concerned that the suspect had the improvised firebomb in the first place.
“Maybe one should also ask, why the guy was already prepared with a Molotov cocktail?” one person noted. “No way to know if the dude walking said something to him for him to possibly flip him off or not.”
They added: “To be prepared you not only need a bottle but a flammable liquid inside the bottle and a wick. That wasn’t no last second decision.”
The man in the wheelchair suffered minor injuries and is expected to recover, police said.
Alexander Emery, 38, faces multiple felony charges, including assault with intent to kill and assault and battery with a deadly weapon.
A motive for the incident has not been disclosed. The investigation is ongoing.
