Andoni Iraola has confirmed Liverpool are making moves to sign a defender.

With the World Cup now concluded, Liverpool can no longer point to the international calendar as the primary reason for a quiet transfer window. Attention will now turn to how quickly the club can execute its recruitment plans ahead of the new season.
Although significant work has taken place behind the scenes, the current squad appears noticeably weaker than it did a year ago. Liverpool have lost several key figures, yet meaningful replacements have not arrived in sufficient numbers.
The most obvious priority is replacing Mohamed Salah. Beyond his goals and assists, Salah provided availability, consistency and elite attacking output over a number of seasons.
Finding a player capable of replicating that influence is arguably the most difficult task facing Richard Hughes and the recruitment department.
The challenges, however, extend far beyond the right wing. Liverpool also need to plan for the future of their defence.
Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have both entered the final year of their contracts, making succession planning a necessity rather than a luxury. Even if both remain beyond this season, the club cannot afford to delay preparations for the next cycle.
There are similar concerns elsewhere.
Andy Robertson's departure has reduced Liverpool's depth at left-back, while uncertainty surrounding Kostas Tsimikas means Milos Kerkez could be left carrying a significant workload. Adding another dependable option would reduce that risk.
Centre-back may be an even greater priority. Behind Van Dijk and Gomez, Liverpool's depth consists largely of potential rather than proven experience.
Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are highly-rated prospects, but neither has featured in the Premier League. Expecting them to provide reliable cover immediately would represent a considerable gamble for a team expected to compete for major honours.
Ultimately, Liverpool's task this summer is not simply one of replacing outgoing players.
It is about managing a generational transition while ensuring the squad remains competitive in the short term. Striking that balance is one of the most difficult challenges in football recruitment, and with the transfer deadline approaching, the margin for error is becoming increasingly small.
Another situation that is concerning is the fact that Liverpool don't really have a first choice right-back. Last season after the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dominik Szoboszlai played most of his time in that role.
But the Hungarian cannot be relied upon as a right-back. He needs to play in midfield.
Andoni Iraola therefore faces a difficult choice.
Jeremie Frimpong isn't really a recognised right-back, he's more of a wing-back and Liverpool cannot afford to rely on him as a first-choice option.
At the same time, Conor Bradley is out with a serious injury and he is unlikely to be back any time soon. Iraola confirmed in his press conference in Chicago that the Northern Irishman is still months away from being fit to play.
He was then asked about transfers and said the following.
"There are other situations we have to analyse what the market gives you. What's the cost. How we also see the players we have. We have some tricky positions where we have injured players that we trust but still not the ideal situation so it will depend a little bit on a lot of things."
When asked about whether he is looking to sign a right-back, Iraola confirmed that the Reds are looking to find a solution.
"So with the centre-back and the right-back situations in terms of defensive depth we are I think really thing right now, and it is a solution we are trying to find, yes," he said.
