The nation has established a National Health Intelligence Centre designed to use AI, data analytics and digital tools to improve disease surveillance and healthcare delivery.
The centre, launched in April 2025, has become one of the continent’s most advanced examples of how artificial intelligence can be applied to public health.
How Rwanda’s AI health system works
As reported by The New Times, the centre’s AI laboratory collects and analyses information from different parts of the healthcare system, including community health workers, health centres and hospitals.
By processing real-time data, the system can identify patterns that may indicate emerging health threats, allowing authorities to act before outbreaks become widespread.
Instead of relying only on reports after patients arrive at healthcare facilities, officials can use predictive analysis to anticipate where health challenges may occur and direct resources accordingly.
Rwanda’s AI-powered health system is designed to do more than monitor diseases.
According to the Ministry of Health, the centre has helped reduce waiting times at health facilities, improve emergency ambulance dispatch, strengthen disease surveillance and improve the targeting of healthcare resources.
The system supports institutions such as the Rwanda Biomedical Centre, which manages programmes addressing diseases including HIV, malaria and non-communicable diseases.
It also works with Rwanda Medical Supply to improve the planning and management of healthcare commodities.
Why Bill Gates is interested in Rwanda’s AI health project
The country’s approach has attracted global attention, with American philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates visiting the National Health Intelligence Centre on Tuesday.
Gates toured the facility alongside Rwanda’s Minister of Health, Dr Sabin Nsanzimana, and Minister for ICT and Innovation Paula Ingabire.
His visit came as the Gates Foundation and Rwanda discussed expanding cooperation in health, artificial intelligence, agriculture and digital public infrastructure.
The partnership is expected to support the centre’s expansion, particularly in developing predictive health intelligence that can provide early warnings of possible disease threats.
